AMAZON : B&N : GOODREADS

I was excited to read Supergirl at Super Hero High because my daughter is a big supers fan. She has actually been watching the Super Hero High cartoon and collects the dolls. I loved this book and thought that it's definitely great for the higher elementary levels. I'm glad to have these books for my daugher to read when she gets a little older.

I loved the book not only for the superheros but because the characters are finding themselves. It’s great how the original origin story is kept until the point when it has to veer off for the characters to go to Super Hero High. In the case of Supergirl she shows up from Krypton later than she was supposed to and instead of guiding Superman, he’s already grown up and in college. Supergirl has been frozen in time so she is still dealing with the loss of her parents like it just happened. Not only that, she is an alien in a new place (many people feel that way in high school). She deals with lack of self-confidence issues and has difficulty believing in herself. She wants to go home but can’t. I like that she finds a friend in Barbara (Bat Girl) and they help eachother out.

I also loved the story that is happening in the background of Supergirl’s self-discovery. It's a fun mystery and they have to figure out how to stop a villian from taking over the world.

I really like these books and I’m so excited for Bat Girl’s installment. The tech whiz becomes a superhero. I love that it’s something that my daughter can feel like it's her own. She's always loved Superheros but now she feels like Superhero High is something just for her. It's very exciting!

It's survival of the strongest in a contemporary, girl-versus-wild middle-grade debut from Fire & Flood author Victoria Scott!

Sloan is a hunter.

But ever since her mom left the family and she lost hearing in one ear in a blizzard, it's been hard to talk to people, and near-impossible to go anywhere or do anything without her dad or big sister within eyesight -- it makes her too scared to be on her own.

When they leave her home alone for what should only be two nights, she's already panicked. Then the snow starts falling and doesn't stop. One of her neighbors is hurt in an accident. "You need this book. You need this series. It's paranormal at its best. It's New Adult at its best...Can I give this book more than 5 stars? I would if I could." ~Valerie, Stuck in Books

EXCERPT:

I lifted my right hand, reaching for my iron stake out of instinct, even though I knew it would do no good against the prince.

“You shouldn’t do that.” His voice was deep with what reminded me of an English accent. “I know you want to, but it would be very, very unwise of you, Ivy.”

My hand twitched.

Creepy Prince smiled slightly. “Your friend has been very helpful.”

That got my hackles up. I slid my sunglasses onto my forehead and forced my tone to stay calm and level. “I’m sure she has. Speaking of Val, happen to know where I can find her?”

His lips curled in a semblance of a smile as he stepped closer. The prince was tall, taller than Ren, who was pushing six foot two. My entire back stiffened as I forced myself to hold my ground, even though every instinct demanded that I run and run super fast, because he had almost killed me once before. Correction. He would have definitely killed me if he hadn’t realized what I was and had, I guessed, healed me.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, instead of answering my question, his pale blue eyes fixed on mine.

My hand curled into a useless fist. “That is extremely creepy to hear.”

That cold smile returned. “Why don’t we talk? There are seats across the way.”

“Yeah, that’s not going to happen.”

The slow smile increased but never reached his eyes. “Oh, I know it is.”

Fine hairs rose on my arms.

“What exactly can you do right now?” he said in the same coldly polite voice. “Refuse me?” Creepy Prince laughed, and it wasn’t a bad sound. Again, it was something that was just cold, as if he were mimicking what a human would do. “You can’t.”

“I can.” My palm itched to grab the thorn stake secured under my pant leg, but I held still. I might be reckless, but I wasn’t stupid.

“Really? I will have to beg to differ on that. You see, humans surround us. So many of them, and I have an extraordinary appetite.” His eyes appeared to glimmer as his gaze slithered from the top of my curly head down to my toes. “A rather impressive appetite for many, many things.”

“Okay. First off, ew.” My lip curled. “Secondly, I don’t want to hear about any of your appetites.”

One dark eyebrow rose. “Oh, but you should know that I could kill twenty of these humans in less than five seconds and feed on the rest, leaving them to believe that it was this little red-headed girl who murdered these innocent people.” His voice dropped even lower as he leaned in and icy air brushed my cheek. “You deny me this, those lives will be on your hands, little bird.”

Anger flushed hotly as my eyes met his. There wasn’t a single part of me that doubted anything he said. He had me. God, I hated to admit it, but he had me.

"Drama! Action! Romance! Twists! Torn had it all...Torn was a perfect continuation of the Wicked Saga." ~Kim, Kimberlyfaye Reads

Smash & Grab by Amy Christine Parker #BookReview #Playlist #Giveaway @The_FFBC

Smash & Grab
by Amy Christine Parker
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Release Date: July 19th 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Mystery, Thriller, Fiction

Ocean’s Eleven meets the star-crossed lovers of West Side Story.Grab some popcorn and get ready for an adrenaline-filled heist!

LEXI is a rich girl who loves a good rush. Whether it’s motorcycle racing or BASE jumping off a building in downtown Los Angeles, the only times she feels alive are when she and her friends are executing one of their dares. After her father’s arrest, Lexi doesn’t think twice about going undercover at his bank to steal the evidence that might clear his name. She enlists her hacker brother and her daredevil friends to plan a clever heist.

CHRISTIAN is a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. The local gang has blackmailed him and his friends into robbing banks, and he is desperate for a way out. When the boss promises that one really big job will be the last he ever has to do, Christian jumps at the chance for freedom. In fact, he’s just met a girl at the bank who might even prove useful. . . .

Two heists. One score. The only thing standing in their way is each other.

Told in alternating points of view, this caper is full of romance and fast-paced fun. Hand to fans of Perfect Chemistry, The Conspiracy of Us, and Heist Society.

Smash & Grab is a fast paced plot that has a way to keep you on the edge of your seat. The chemistry between the two POV’s is intoxicating.

The story of Smash & Grab immediately sucked me in. Everything starts happening right away so there is no lag in the plot. I loved that Lexi and Christian are from two different backgrounds but continue to cross paths and common interest. They are doing their illegal activities for different surface reasons but the end game for both of them is to protect their families.

Lexi is such a kick ass girl. Bam actually reminded me of Gilmore Girls when Rory first meets Logan only with a little role reversal. She rides a motorcycle and takes risk for the adrenline rush. She is also very intelligent and loyal to those who she cares about.

Christian is also very intelligent and unfortunately even though he wants to go to college, he feels it’s unattainable due to his life circumstances. It’s sad to see him stuck in his illegal activities.

The chemistry between Lexi and Christian is explosive. You just want them together but they keep needing to use each other to help themselves out. They lie to one another but they also see through the disguises they put on.

I loved how involved and fast-paced is and the character chemistry just helps add to the suspense. It’s more of a slow burn relationship since they have so many hurdles. This was such a fun read.

Lies I Live By by Lauren Sabel #BookReview #Playlist #Giveaway @The_FFBC

Lies I Live By
by Lauren Sabel
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Release Date: May 31st 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Romance, intrigue, and action collide in this psychic twist on the classic spy novel.

Callie Sinclair is literally out of her mind; as the government’s youngest psychic spy, she finds valuable information for top-secret missions. Her work keeps her headaches at bay, but it means she must lie to everyone she loves, including her longtime boyfriend, Charlie.

When a new psychic arrives at the office, Callie can’t help but flirt; Jasper already knows her in a way Charlie never will.

But as her love life gets more complicated, so do her visions. People halfway around the world seem to be in danger...and people in her own backyard, too. If Callie can’t find a way to alter future events, she could lose the people she loves—and her mind. Literally.

Lauren Sabel’s enthralling, romantic novel captures the thrill of exploring a unique power in a dangerous world.

Lies I Live by has a great premise. There is a group of psychics who work for a secret agency. Each has talents in different areas to aid in preventing wars, attacks, etc..

There are many things that I really liked about the book set-up. Instead of spending the beginning of the book with Callie finding out who she is what she can do. We get a little prologue that explains when Indigo finds her and how she ends up going into the society. We then jump ahead and are in Callie’s working life. I liked that it’s not drawn out to get to that point. You still get the information you need to understand what she does, as she goes through the motions of a normal day.

Another thing I really liked is that we meet Callie, who already is in a relationship with Charlie and has been for three years. This is important because there is a love triangle. Before that scares you away though, I like how it was done. It’s part of Callie and Charlie’s relationship changing, evolving and growing up. No relationship is perfect all the time and I like how the triangle challenges them to see if they stay together. Not every teen relationship has a happy ending. Callie learns some lessons about love.

As far as the boys are concerned. I don’t want to get too much into them or who I was rooting for. I like how their personalities are definitely different from each other. They brought different things to story. Also an insider/outsider view as well.

I like Callie’s relationship with her mom and her mom’s boyfriend. Her mom is not perfect and she talks about at times that her mom didn’t want to be one. When Callie is really struggling though her mom comes in and gives her advice. Her moms boyfriend will watch neighbors tv on the roof with her.

I did struggle with the pace of the plot. I liked it but there were times it felt like it was taking too long to get to a certain point. I expect thrillers to have a certain beat, like music.

Overall I did like the characters, the story and yes I even liked the love triangle. I’m always amazed when someone is able to write a story like this with it’s intricate details.

Originally from the Rocky Mountains, Lauren Sabel has returned to the cool mountain air of Boulder, Colorado after living in several wonderful cities that she will always love and continue to visit year after year.

Lauren loves her husband, her family, her friends, and stories that end happily. (Unfortunately, hers never do.) She also loves digging into her mind and revealing tiny gems she didn’t know were there.

Lauren learned to mind dig while getting her MFA in Creative Writing from Naropa, a Buddhist college in Boulder, Colorado. Before Naropa, Lauren studied film in Rome, where she developed her love of crypts and other beautiful creepy things. She also worked in the film industry in New York and San Francisco, focusing mainly on film festivals, as she can never pass up a good party. In San Francisco she worked for Chronicle Books, where she was inducted into the fascinating world of book publishing.

For the past eight years, Lauren has been teaching college students the joys of creative writing, whether they like it or not.

In 2008, Lauren was published in Undiscovered Voices, an anthology of the best new writers for children in the U.K., where she was living at the time. Then life got very exciting very quickly. She signed with Jodi Reamer Esq. at The Writer’s House Agency in New York, and they made magic happen, and that magic is named Katherine Tegen. (aka: Katherine Tegen Publishing, Harper Collins).

At that time, I was obsessed with reading books about the remote viewers who helped the US government during the Cold War. My book LIES I LIVE BY came out of how that research blended with my imagination. Callie, the 17 year old psychic spy, burst out of me with a voice of her own, and 18 months later, she was ready.

LIES I LIVE BY came out May 2016 with Katherine Tegen Books.

The Virgin and the Viscount by Charis Michaels #BookReview #Giveaway

In the next sparkling romance in debut author Charis Michael’s Bachelor Lords of London series, a proper viscount meets his match in a beguiling virgin who can't help but break all the rules.

The Virgin
Lady Elisabeth Hamilton-Baythes has a painful secret. At the innocent age of fifteen, she was abducted by highwaymen and sold to a brothel. After two days, a young lord discovers her and enacts a brave rescue to get her out. Now she's a grown woman, working to save other girls from the horror she saw that night and never forgetting the young man who rescued her.

The Viscount
Bryson Courtland, Viscount Rainsleigh has overcome an abusive boyhood, neglectful parents, and a bankrupt title to be one of the wealthiest noblemen in Britain. He works tirelessly to be upright and forthright and proper to a fault. Now he requires only one thing: A proper, forthright, proper wife.

The Unraveling
When a charity event puts Lord Bryson and Lady Elisabeth face-to-face, Bryson has no memory of the wounded girl of long ago. All he can see is a perfect candidate to be his future wife. Elisabeth has never forgotten him, but she worries that the brave boy who saved her so long ago has become a rich man with an unfulfilled life.

As a whirlwind courtship reveals the truth, Bryson must accept that Elisabeth is actually a shadow from his dark past, while Elisabeth must show that love is the noblest virtue of all.

AVON : AMAZON : B&N : GOOGLE PLAY
The Virgin and the Viscount was such a great romance story. It was exactly the kind of book I was looking for. It had Historical, it had a strong female lead and a guy who was a mixture of dreamy and troubled.

I absolutely adored Elizabeth, as well as her Aunt. Elisabeth is a strong and fierce woman and I love that some of that comes from her Aunt’s influence. They have such a great relationship and I thought it was an important part of Elisabeth’s character. I also like how, although wooed by Bryce for a few reasons, she also stands her ground with him often. She wants him to accept her for who she is and is very up front about it. Of course there are things that she holds back but it’s not the easiest thing for her to tell.

Bryce pursues Elisabeth which is also something that I really enjoyed about the story. He is so determined that she is the person that he wants he will sit outside her door for days if he has to. As charming and admirable as Bryce is, he is also deeply wounded by his upbringing. He does quite a few idiotic things, but he is always sincerely apologetic about them. He is very concerned about his reputation but there is also that part of him that just wants to be loved. Even if he doesn’t realize it. As far as character growth, he probably shows the most.

The romance is a whirlwind and sweet at times. Other times it’s dark and confused. Bryce knows that Elizabeth is the girl for him but stumbles along, trying to keep love out of it. Of course you can’t control who you love. Elisabeth has the patience of a saint when it comes to him. She is also full of compassion and understanding about how he is emotionally damaged. One her best qualities is her inability to give up.

I really liked the characters and the plot. With the historical setting and the uniquely swoon worthy romance. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Charis Michaels is thrilled to be making her debut with Avon Impulse. Prior to writing romance, she studied Journalism at Texas A&M and managed PR for a trade association. She has also worked as a tour guide at Disney World, harvested peaches on her family’s farm, and entertained children as the “Story Godmother” at birthday parties. She has lived in Texas, Florida, and London, England. She now makes her home in the Washington, D.C.-metro area.

My fingers tightened around the slender remote. “I was thinking that if the prince can sense me, why hasn’t he showed up here?”

“I don’t know.” Tink came down to the coffee table and started marching across it. I’m not the prince, but if I was the prince, I’d be buying time.”

“Buying time?” I scooted to the edge of the couch.

“Yeah, because he’s got to win you over.” Tink swiped up the straw he’d had in his Coke. It was nearly the size of him. “That’s basically what he has to do if he wants to impregnate you.”

I cringed, like a full body cringe. “Please do not use the word impregnate ever again.”

“Why? That’s what he wants to do.” He started dancing with the straw, the kind of dancing you see in the clubs. Hips gyrating all over the place. “He knows coercing or tricking you isn’t going to get the deed done, so he’s probably trying to learn how not to be a sexed up dickhead.”

“Sexed up dickhead?” I repeated.

“Uh-huh.” Tink dipped the straw as one would a dancer. “Remember when I was telling you how I saw the prince getting it on with three females once? He’s totes sexed up. And he’s a dickhead. In other words, he has no empathy or compassion. No humanity.”

“Most fae don’t.”

Tink twirled the straw. “Yeah, but the ancients are worse. They’re as far away from human as you can get. He’s going to have to work on wooing you.”

I slowly shook my head. “That’s…” There were no words.

“That’s what I’d do.” Tink dropped the straw and whipped around toward me. “Or he’s plotting something major and any moment he’s going to knock down the front door and storm the place.”

“Wow.” A fine shiver curled down my spine. “That’s really a relaxing thought.”

He zipped over to the couch and sat on the arm. He tipped his head back and stared up at me. “Don’t worry. I’m here to protect you.”

I just looked at him, because other than ordering shit off of Amazon, the only strength he had was the unique ability to annoy the crap out of me while somehow still managing to be endearing.

Tink grinned. “Trust me, Ivy. The Prince is not going to want to mess with me.”

EXCERPT:

Abby

People near the stage scream and clap and I’m about ready to throw my cell against the wall. Stupid, stupid boy and stupid me for stupidly somewhat liking him and him thinking he can get away with not answering me.

“Give it up for our boy Logan.”

My eyes rip up, go for the stage, and my mind shifts into reverse, fast-forward, rewind, and then that smile that’s associated with the devil slides across my face.

Logan stands strong on the stage. Guitar strapped across his chest. Baseball cap backwards on his black hair. And when he strikes the strings of the guitar, those biceps flex beautifully.

That chord just struck a lot deeper than anyone could have imagined. Past my bones, past my muscles, and it’s created a nice warmth that’s curling around my belly. Liquid warmth.

The logical part of my brain demands that I walk away, but he’s the one that scared me by not answering back. He’s the one that’s causing all these alien emotions stirring in my veins.

Yeah, I shouldn’t kiss Logan. I should definitely leave a boy like that alone. But he returned and he’s the one that climbed onto the stage and is looking addictively sexy with that guitar.

Yep, shouldn’t kiss him, but I already told Rachel, I’m going to kiss the guitarist tonight. Wouldn’t want that one to be a lie, now, would I?
