What's Broken Between Us
by Alexis Bass
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: December 29th 2015

Alexis Bass’s heartbreakingly beautiful second novel is a tale of love, loss, and learning to forgive.

Look to the left, look to the right. We’re all going to die. But someone has to do it first. So who’s it going to be?

Tragedy struck Amanda Tart’s town a year and a half ago when a sophomore girl was killed in a car accident on graduation night.
Amanda’s brother, Jonathan, was behind the wheel and too drunk to drive. He’s spent the past year in prison and has cut off all ties. But now Jonathan is coming home. Just as Amanda’s trying to figure out what that means for her family and herself, she’s paired up for a school project with Henry Crane—a former crush, and brother of Jonathan’s ex-girlfriend, who survived the crash with horrible injuries.

Everyone is still incredibly damaged by the events of that night. Can Amanda and Henry finally begin to heal what’s broken and find some peace?

PINTEREST BOARD FOR WHAT'S BROKEN BETWEEN US (by Alexis Bass)

What’s Broken Between Us is that book that you read on a stormy day. This book will definitely give you all different kinds of feels.

When I was a sophomore in high school, three junior girls from the student council were out in the morning of Homecoming to teepee the school. This was some kind of tradition. They were struck by a drunk driver at about 5a and all three were killed. Jennifer, Jennifer and Allison. I remember when it happened and how crazy it was. The aftermath of it, I remember one of the girls sisters would do talks about drunk driving. Also when I was in school a teacher was hit by a drunk driver. A young girl who just got a promotion and was celebrating. He left behind a wife and kids. His brother does a presentation for the schools that makes me cry every time I see it. Drunk Driving is a very ugly ugly thing and I like that What’s Broken Between Us keeps it ugly.

Jonathan is an interesting character because of how broken he is. He gets out of jail and he is still troubled. He is not instantly reformed and that’s what I like about the way his character is written. He killed someone and not just any someone but his best friend. A girl that was beyond special to him and now he has to live with it forever. Yes her death was an accident but sometimes that makes it worse. If she had been murdered by someone else you could blame that person, if it had been faulty brakes, blame the car, if it had been treacherous weather, blame the sky. Instead he has nobody to blame but himself. Then he gets out of jail and he is not only weighted down by that guilt but by everyone's expectations. He’s supposed to be sorry, he’s supposed to be reformed, he’s supposed to want to do community outreach, he’s supposed to be something. When really he just wants to disappear. I think the way Alexis shows us his character is important because it doesn’t always work out the way it should.

Amanda and Henry. Well they make some poor choices in the story. Relationship wise especially but I’m not a person that shies away from that. I wish I could say those sorts of things don’t happen but they do and they’ve happened to me. Besides that I really like the two of them and how much they care for the other. Despite what happened with their siblings. They kind of have to wade through all of that to get back to each other. I really like the flashback of how their story began and Grace’s wise words about them. We see Amanda really change and develop as she tries to cope. To be a good sister and to deal with how her brothers actions affect her. They do of course in more way than one. She tries to be strong and put on a brave face but she is also broken. Henry is angry and needs to find an outlet.

This book is dark, very dark. It’s also very good because like I said, it shows you the ugly. It doesn’t try to wrap everything in a neat bow. You won’t necessarily have the characters turn out the way you think they should. I really liked it for that.

Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake #Excerpt

Title: Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers, #1)
Release date: 1/5/16
Author: Brenda Drake

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

I pressed the screen, and it went dark. “How do we know he’s not being forced to say this?”
“The password, May Agnes guide you,” Lei replied. “She’s the patron saint of Asile.”
Agnes? That was the silver woman’s name that formed from my globe. Did the saints have something to do with the Chiavi?
I faced Ricardo. “How did you know I was here?”
“The werehounds tracked your scent from a shirt Katy…excuse me, your nana…gave us.”
“Can your pack help us save Couve?” Arik asked him.
“They will, but Gia must go with me.” He noticed the protest forming on my lips. “Merlin said no exceptions. I’m to get you to the shelter.”
From the corridor came yells, scuffles, and the continual wail of the warning siren.
“I can’t go with you,” I said. “I have to fight with them.”
“She can’t fight with us,” Lei said, glancing at the door. “She almost killed Kale.”
I turned to Sinead. “You know what I can do.”
Sinead gave me a pity smile. “Yes, but you have no control over it. Let Ricardo take you to your father and friends.”
I thought of Kale lying motionless, near death, and I hated that she was right. As much as I wanted to stay, I might be more hindrance than help. I caved. “Okay,” I said, defeated. Lei flew out of the room with the Laniars on her heels.
Sinead hugged me, then rushed after them. Arik moved over to me and cupped my face gently in his hands. His eyes held the intensity that always drew me to him.
I swallowed my breath in anticipation. All the sounds around us went silent.
He bent and lightly brushed my lips with a kiss. His lips were soft and oh, so tender. Butterflies swooped and curled inside me, and it felt like the ground disappeared from beneath my feet. He pulled back a little and said, “Regardless of the fact that you’re a royal pain in the arse, I fancy you. Listen to Ricardo and don’t do anything rash.”
He gave me another kiss and rushed out the door. My heart twisted in my chest as he disappeared. I touched my mouth and exhaled. He liked me. It was against the laws, but he told me he fancied me. Maybe we had no future, but we had now.
“What a sweet display,” Ricardo said, dragging me out of my haze. “I’m not one for rules or laws, but I’d be careful there. The punishment would be much worse for him than you.”
“Why?” I stared at the door as if I’d see Arik there.
“He’s a leader. He knows better.” Ricardo headed to the window. “Are you ready to fly?”
          “Did you say fly?”

Brenda Drake, the youngest of three children, grew up an Air Force brat and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. “Heather Lyons has officially charmed me. Royal Marriage Market is an indulgent read that will have you flipping pages until the very end.” – R.S. Grey, USA Today bestselling author.

“I denied myself the éclairs earlier and then resolved, as I stared up at the ceiling for a good hour, that life is too short to not indulge in things that bring about small joys.”
I wander over to the island, positioning myself on the opposite side. “Éclairs bring you such?”
His grin grows. “Hell yeah, they do. Want one?”
Three éclairs rest upon his plate. “Will it bring me joy?”
“Have you ever eaten an éclair in the middle of the night, Els?”
I blink at the nickname he bestows upon me. No one has ever called me Els. Not a single person. It’s bizarre, because one would think such a derivative would be natural, but Her Serene Highness was strict about such things during my childhood. My name is Elsa. I ought to be called Elsa. Nicknames are common, and she claimed she wanted more for me.
Whatever that meant.
Despite our earlier conversation concerning his own, though, I happen to like nicknames. “As a matter of fact,” I say, absurdly pleased at the bestowment, “I have not.”
“Then this shall be a first for you.” He shoves the plate my way. “Don’t worry. Éclairs eaten in the middle of the night have no calories. If they did, I’d be at least five pounds heavier already.”
It is impossible to not grin like a fool. Are we really standing here in the kitchen, in the dead of night, sparring with one another again? And why is it so bloody entertaining? Small joys, indeed. “Is that so? Well then. This will be more than just a first for eating an éclair in the middle of the night. It will be my first time consuming a calorie free dessert, too. Who knew such things existed?”
“Shall I make you some warm milk, too?”
I blink again, abruptly unsteady.
“You were rooting around in the fridge for milk to heat up, weren’t you?” He motions to his own mug. “As it helps with snoring parents?”
I counter with, “Why were you sitting here in the dark?”
“I’d had my cell’s flashlight on, but switched it off when noises sounded outside the door. I suppose I wasn’t too keen on being caught rummaging around the kitchen in the middle of the night.” He touches the ceramic in front of him once more. “Yes or no?”
I gingerly select one of the éclairs, shivering at its coldness. “Actually, yes. I would very much like that. Do you know how to heat up milk?”
The room may be dim, but there’s no mistaking the comical yet wounded look he proffers. “Everyone knows how to do that.”
“Not everyone. There are surely milk virgins in the world.”
He wanders over to the fridge and extracts a carton of milk. “Rest assured, I am no milk virgin. I’m thirty, remember?”
It is my turn to nearly choke as I swallow a far too large bite of éclair.
“No choking allowed. If four a.m. rolls around, the calories will come back.”
I clear my throat. “Is three a.m. a magical hour, then?”
He heads over toward the stovetop, where a small pan rests upon another stainless steel countertop. I angle our phones’ flashlights his way; shadows crawl around his body as a blue flame erupts from a burner, allowing me to ogle silently at a well-shaped arse. Goodness. Will his too-ness ever cease?
“As a matter of fact, it is. All the best firsts should be experienced at three a.m.” He sets the pan on the stove and adds milk. “But it’s a witching hour. The magic only lasts for sixty minutes before turning ordinary once more.”
With the next bite of éclair, pleasure bursts across my tongue. Curse him for being spot on about pastry-based joy.

About ROYAL MARRIAGE MARKET:

Every decade, the world’s monarchs and their heirs secretly convene to discuss global politics and social issues—and arrange marriages between kingdoms.

Elsa may be the Hereditary Princess of Vattenguldia, but she finds the entire situation archaic and unsavory. While she wants what's best for her country, she isn't about to jump into an unwanted relationship—let alone a marriage—with a virtual stranger. Of course, her feelings matter little to her parents, whose wheeling and dealings over trade pacts and alliances achieved at her expense begin the moment they set foot in California for the Summit. So when a blindingly handsome royal runs into her, she doesn't hesitate to tell him there's no way she's marrying him.

Christian is all too happy to agree: no marriage. As the Hereditary Grand Duke of Aiboland, his main goal is to get through the summit without a bride being foisted on him. Which is why he suggests they help each other field potential intendeds. As Christian slowly gets to know Elsa, though, he realizes they have a lot more in common than just their feelings about the Royal Marriage Market. Only he can't fall for her, because royal or not, they're not meant for each other.

Elsa and Christian will have to evaluate matters of the heart verses those of state and crown, and decide whether or not tradition trumps love.

"The perfect royal romance." Nichole Chase, New York Times bestselling author.

Sneak peek of the Titan Enquirer from Victoria Scott's TITANS #TitansThursday

Titans by Victoria Scott
February 23rd 2016 by Scholastic Press

Ever since the Titans first appeared in her Detroit neighborhood, Astrid Sullivan’s world has revolved around the mechanical horses. She and her best friend have spent countless hours watching them and their jockeys practice on the track. It’s not just the thrill of the race. It’s the engineering of the horses and the way they’re programmed to seem so lifelike. The Titans are everything that fascinates Astrid, and nothing she’ll ever touch.

She hates them a little, too. Her dad lost everything betting on the Titans. And the races are a reminder of the gap between the rich jockeys who can afford the expensive machines to ride, and the working class friends and neighbors of Astrid’s who wager on them.

But when Astrid’s offered a chance to enter an early model Titan in this year’s derby, well, she decides to risk it all. Because for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, it’s more than a chance at fame or money. Betting on herself is the only way she can see to hang on to everyone in the world she cares about.

Poet Anderson...Of Nightmares by Tom Delonge & Suzanne Young #BookReview #Giveaway

Poet Anderson...Of Nightmares follows the epic journey of two orphan brothers, Jonas and Alan, who are Lucid Dreamers. After a tragic car accident lands Alan in a coma, Jonas sets out into the Dream World in an attempt to find his brother and wake him up. What he discovers instead is an entire shared consciousness where fear comes to life as a snarling beast called a Night Terror, and a creature named REM is bent on destruction and misery, devouring the souls of the strongest dreamers to get closer to the Waking World. With the help of a Dream Walker—a guardian of the dreamscape, Jonas must face his fears, save his brother, and become who he was always meant to be: Poet Anderson.

So Poet Anderson...of Nightmares is not necessarily a book I would immediately pick up...but it should be. This was such a cool story and well written plot. This book is different and definitely worth the read. I love Suzanne Young’s writing and so that shouldn’t be a surprise for me and of course Tom DeLonge. It’s like a power team.

I love anything that involves dreams and the possibility of controlling your dreams. I’m a vivid dreamer myself and even read in my dreams. So this book made me even more intrigued. Like not only is it cool but it made want to pull out dream studies and do some research. I love any book that can trigger that in me.

The world building is fantastic. You have these different types of dreamers. You have the lucid dreamers, the dreamwalkers and the poets. They all have these different levels of how they can manipulate and control dreams. This concept of the poets leading lost dreamers to a safe place is so cool. I just loved it. It kept me turning the pages because I had to know more, I was completely absorbed.

I loved Jonas as the main character. I find that I don’t often read male leads anymore and this book made me realize how sad that is. Jonas is not only a fun character to read but he also has some great character development. He is very family oriented but we meet him at a spot where he is having to stand on his own two feet. It’s not bad that his brother and him did everything together but I liked going through the motions of becoming his own person with him.

The side characters are great. I don’t even want to talk about them because I don’t want to give anything away.

So basically this is that book that I’m telling you to check out and read. You’ll be awed by it’s awesomeness and really great creative plot. Don’t let the cover scare you...okay so the cover totally freaks me out when I look at it and when you read…..well just read it.

Even Ella has to admit it’s a better plan than she – or her lawyer – have come up with. But for the plan to work, Ella has to not only rely on Josh, but trust him. Implicitly.

Come Back to Me by Mila Gray #BookReview #Playlist #Giveaway #FFBC

Come Back to Me (Come Back to Me #1)
by Mila Gray
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: December 8th 2015

In this heart-wrenching tale of love and loss, a young Marine and his best friend’s sister plunge into a forbidden love affair while he’s home on leave.

When a Marine Chaplain knocks on her door, Jessa’s heart breaks—someone she loves is dead. Killed in action, but is it Riley or Kit? Her brother or her boyfriend…

Three months earlier, Marine Kit Ryan finds himself back home on leave and dangerously drawn to his best friend Riley’s sister, Jessa—the one girl he can’t have. Exhausted from fighting his feelings, Kit finally gives in, and Jessa isn’t strong enough to resist diving headfirst into a passionate relationship.

But what was just supposed to be a summer romance develops into something far greater than either of them expected. Jessa’s finally found the man of her dreams and Kit’s finally discovered there’s someone he’d sacrifice everything for.

When it’s time for Kit to redeploy, neither one is ready to say goodbye. Jessa vows to wait for him and Kit promises to come home to her. No matter what.

But as Jessa stands waiting for the Marine Chaplain to break her heart, she can’t help but feel that Kit has broken his promise…

Riley or Kit? Kit or Riley? Her brother or her boyfriend? Who’s coming home to her?

Come Back to Me has such a great romance between Jessa and Kit. I loved them as a couple and going through their relationship but another great part of this book is the military. The Marines are strongly represented her as well as the fallout of being one and loving one. I loved that it deals with PTSD not just for the ones suffering but the people around them.

Jessa is very meek in the beginning of the book. Her father suffers from PTSD so she has come accustomed to walking on eggshells around the house. I felt so angry at Jessa’s mom for not protecting her better. Although I was mad at Jessa’s dad and really disliked him, I had to take a minute and think about his own trials. I think it’s difficult to shake off that stigma that goes with getting help, especially when you're a strong military person. So Jessa doesn’t know what is going to trigger him and has found herself shaping her life and herself around that. It’s sad to watch her recede into herself like that. When she meets Kit everything changes.

Kit is not only a marine but Jessa’s brother, Riley, best friend. So Jessa is supposed to be off limits. Besides the fact that her father hates him for reasons unknown to everyone except Kit’s dad and Jessa’s dad. I love how Kit can be fearless and romantic at the same time. He is the sweetest guy and even though he might have been a player. You can really see how much he cares about Jessa. He brings out the best side of her and makes her try things she wouldn’t normally. She becomes more confident with Kit around and is able to take steps to standing up to her dad. He basically frees her from her prison.

Riley is Jessa’s brother and is in the Marines with Kit. I like how strong of relationship he and Jess have even though she feels a little like he left her with their dad. His girlfriend Jo is another way that the Marines is spotlighted. She has been struggling 3 years in a long term relationship. She loves Riley but you can also see how hard it is on her.

The book starts out with an emotional scene that you have no investment in until you start reading. Jessa finds out someone has been killed in action but she doesn’t know who. How do you choose both losses are heartbreaking. It’s almost torturous as you read the book and get to know the two boys.

I really liked Come Back To Me. The way it interweaves the military and how it affects everyone is brilliant. Your heart really connects to these characters.

Lies We Live by Brenda St. John Brown #Excerpt #Giveaway

Ella Ingraham is a best-selling novelist. She's also a murderer. At least that's what most of the world thinks after her ex brought a tabloid frenzy and a civil suit down on her for "negligence" following the stillbirth of their unplanned child at eight months. Her cross-country drive is meant to be an escape, and Horatio, AR is just another random exit off the highway. Until she meets Josh Devereaux.

Josh Devereaux – seductive, charming and hot, hot, hot – is a part-time farmer, full-time tech genius holed up in his hometown after a few years in New York turned him into someone else. Someone worse. His closetful of skeletons has been locked up tight since he returned to Arkansas, right along with his heart. He knows Ella could unlock both – and what a bad idea that would be.

Ella has no intention of getting involved with Josh, but as one date turns into more, feelings surface Ella hasn't felt in years -- like hope. As their relationship grows, Josh knows he should tell Ella the truth about his past. If only the lie wasn't so much easier to believe.

Josh leans back on his stool and I follow the long line of faded Levi’s, stained a faded brown on the thighs, frayed along the seams.
I bet he has a nice ass.
I try to push the thought away and twirl my half-empty beer glass on the smooth wood. “You probably know everybody in here. What’s that like? Everybody knows your story and how do you…” I twirl my glass again like that’s a deliberate pause and I’m not cutting myself short because that’s a more honest answer than I expected to give. Certainly more honest than the one I gave when asked in Tennessee. Or any state north of there. Including New York.
“Maintain your sanity?” Josh finishes my sentence for me, but I suspect he knows, too, that wasn’t what I was about to say. His brown eyes are too intent on my face. “That’s a loaded question if there ever was one. How long are you staying?”
“Staying?”
“Well, Horatio is as small-town as you’re going to get and we have Bible thumpers to spare.” Josh takes another long swallow of his Bass. “You won’t learn anything on a bathroom break and a beer. You should stay and have dinner with me.”
“For research?” I ask, taking a bite of the bread. Research could be a lot worse.
Josh shakes his head. “No. Because I want you to.”
I’m not sure what startles me more – his directness or the fact I kind of want to have dinner with him. And that’s exactly what I don’t need. “I don’t even know you.”
“You think you do.” Josh’s retort is quick. And dead on.
“Likewise.”
“Touché.” His eyes skim my legs again and his mouth loses all but a trace of a smile. “Prove me wrong.”
