About Pushing the Boundaries:

Myra goes to Haiti with one goal: take the photograph that will win a scholarship and prove to her uber-traditional family that she has what it takes to be a photographer instead of a doctor. Her camera has always been her shield against getting too close to anyone, but she didn’t expect the hot teen translator who has an ability to see past her walls.

Elias needs his job as a translator to provide for his siblings. He can’t afford to break the rule forbidding him from socializing with a client. Except this girl Myra insists on going outside the city to capture the perfect picture, and he steps in as her guide in order to keep her safe.

The deeper they travel into the country, the harder they fall for each other. Now they’re both taking risks that could cost each other their dreams.

If they get too close—it could ruin both their lives.

Disclaimer: Caution! Reading this book will open your heart and inspire you to take risks. Only those searching for true love should proceed.

The Alchemists of Loom by Elisa Kova

The Alchemists of Loom
by Elise Kova
(Loom Saga #1)
Publication date: January 10th 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Her vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

The Alchemist of Loom is a very interesting adventure. Filled with magic, lies and betrayal. It’s definitely a darker story with main characters who are not necessarily pure of heart.

The story is told in four main points of view. Arianna, Cvareh, Florence and Leona. My two favorite characters end up being Cvareh and Florence.

Ari is on a mission for revenge for what the Dragons have taken from her. She uses the guise of wanting to restore Loom but she is really fueled by her deep hatred. As the story progresses you see many sides of Ari and not all of them are pretty. Her development is slower but she has many demons to come to terms with.

Leona ugh being in the villain's eyes was definitely interesting. She is a villain because of her loyalty to the actual villain, the Dragon King. He plays her and she knows it but doesn’t care. I hated reading her parts but at the same time they were interesting. It was interesting to me at one point Cva points out their similarities.

I absolutely loved Florence and Cvareh. Florence is the character I felt had the most growth in the story. She starts out this curious but scared apprentice of Arianna. She knows her way about the black market but is not one for hand to hand combat. It’s amazing to me how much she changed through their adventure and really grows.

Cvareh is just likeable. Even though he has his Dragon nature when you get to the heart of him he is good. Better than Arianna in my opinion. He is loyal to his house of course but he also is able to see past prejudices. His eyes really become open on the journey and he embraces the knowledge instead of pushing it away.

Definitely an interesting story. I was lost in the beginning a bit but I didn’t read Elise Kova's other series. So that might be my confusion. As the story progresses my confusion was easily ironed out. I did have some points I felt it was slow but I’m also an impatient reader. I’m definitely curious to see where the story goes. I really enjoyed the ending of this installment. I'm also hoping for more in Petra's POV.

Elise Kova has always had a profound love of fantastical worlds. Somehow, she managed to focus on the real world long enough to graduate with a Master’s in Business Administration before crawling back under her favorite writing blanket to conceptualize her next magic system. She currently lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and when she is not writing can be found playing video games, watching anime, or talking with readers on social media. She is the USA Today bestselling author of the Air Awakens Series as well as the upcoming Loom Saga (Keymaster, 2017).

After four years of first love bliss, Isla Rush just got dumped.
Any hope she has of winning her ex-boyfriend back is shattered when the town rezones her neighborhood, forcing her to spend senior year at a wealthy high school in the next town over.
With a broken heart consuming her soul, Isla can’t focus on anything, except maybe Emory Underwood—a ridiculously hot guy who dates a new girl almost every day. She can’t help but crush on him, even though it’s wrong.
When memories of her ex make her cry in second period, the school counselor sends Isla to a club that meets during lunch. The Break-Up Support Group is a collection of broken-hearted misfits who are all helping each other heal.
Just when Isla’s heart is finally on the mend, Emory shows up, forced to atone for all the broken hearts he’s caused over the years. While hiding her massive crush, she helps him understand the seriousness of breaking a heart.
In turn, Emory offers to help Isla get back on the dating scene by agreeing to be her fake date for the homecoming dance. Isla gladly accepts the ruse, because if anyone can make her into a desirable girlfriend, Emory can! There's just one small problem.
Isla's little crush on Emory might be exactly full blown. And a homecoming fake date with him could push her over the edge to possibly uttering the "L Word!"
Isla can't afford another heartbreak so soon after the last one. She will have to resist his charms, refuse to look into those dreamy eyes, and above all else, not make the mistake of letting him kiss her.
If only she hadn't let her guard down at the end of the night, under the light of her porch in a toe-curling kiss moment of weakness. And now, after months of Break-Up Support Group therapy, and with a heart fully on the mend, Isla has just handed it over to a guy who knows full well just how to break it.

Flashfall by Jenny Moyer #BookReview #Playlist #Giveaway

by Jenny Moyer
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)
Release Date: November 15th 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Dystopia

Orion is a Subpar, expected to mine the tunnels of Outpost Five, near the deadly flash curtain. For generations, her people have chased cirium—the only element that can shield humanity from the curtain’s radioactive particles. She and her caving partner, Dram work the most treacherous tunnel, fighting past flash bats and tunnel gulls, in hopes of mining enough cirium to earn their way into the protected city.

But when newcomers arrive at Outpost Five, Orion uncovers disturbing revelations that make her question everything she thought she knew about life on both sides of the cirium shield. As conditions at the outpost grow increasingly dangerous, it’s up to Orion to forge a way past the flashfall, beyond all boundaries, beyond the world as she knows it.

Flashfall is one of those books that I wanted to read in one sitting, the world around me completely melted away. I needed to know what would happen to Orion and Dram. To the entire community.

I loved the plot. It reminded me a little of Hunger Games and Under the Never Sky but it definitely stands out as it’s own story. We have the main city full of naturals, people not altered by radiation. Then we have the subpars which are people who have been changed by the flash curtain. The subpars mine the cirium that the city needs to sustain itself. Of course things are not always as they seem and as Orion begins to unravel the truth, things get complicated. People lose their lives every day in the mines and it’s not for what they think.

The unity of the characters and their community is endearing. Outpost 5 cavers are willing to do what they can so at least some of them can be free. This is one of those stories where nobody is safe and some go by choice, others don’t. Every person who loses their life means something and the community members make sure of that. I love the strong bond that they have.

I absolutely loved Orion and Dram’s relationship. We start off the book knowing they are the best of friends and would do anything for the other. Things progress between them so naturally where at first, I wasn’t even sure if Dram was actually the love interest. I also really like how they face everything together, it’s definitely my favorite type of relationship. One isn’t going off to save the other, they know they are stronger together.

Orion kind of finds herself being the chosen one without really meaning to. She is extremely strong and rebellious. Everyone counts in her eyes and she also has an ability that nobody knows about. She can sense Cirium they are mining, which easily moves her to the lead ore scout role. With or without that skill, Orion is a brave and resourceful miner. She is a survivor and it doesn’t matter what setting you throw her in.

Flashfall is very well paced and I read the book quickly because it was so engaging. There is danger and reveals around every turn. I couldn’t help but love it!

If you are looking for a good Sci-fi read, I highly recommend this. It’s going in my favorites section of my shelf.

The Lost Codex hits the ground running. We finally find the fates of our friends and enemies is the emotional and complex ending to the series.

The plot is fast paced and action packed. There is soo much that goes on in this book. So very much. There are so many loose ends that are tied up in the race to the finish. You can’t even really get into details because it’s possible to give something away.

I have always loved the writing in The Collector’s Society series. It just has the lyrical way about it that reminds me of Wonderland.

I love Alice because there are times when I don’t like her. Not because she is annoying for making dumb decisions but because I don’t always agree with her. She is so stubborn and bull headed at times that it can be frustrating. She is also loyal and true to her heart though and thinks of her people above all. She is such a great character because she is such a faceted character.

Finn is always the more docile narrative in the series. He’s kind of like the calming voice to Alice’s stubbornness. With him going through so many different things we don’t see him as much.

This was definitely a perfect end to the series. There were many things that surprised and some things that were like ah yes that makes sense, like The Librarian’s identity. I’m sad to see the series go because it’s been such a fun read.

I have been with this series since the beginning and it's been an amazing journey. What I have loved most is the involvement of so many different stories and timelines. It was one of the most enjoyable parts of reading. Finding out who was going to show up next. Sometimes I recognized people right away and sometimes I didn't.

Picking a villain for the series is a scary thing because there are some many villains that seem like extremely formidable foes. I think about Voldemort or the Darkling. How would the Society defeat them. It would be interesting to know. Of course the horcruxes could be spread across timelines.

So who would I choose......
The King of the Jinni from The Forbidden Wish
How do you fight a Jinn?? It would be awesome to see The Collector Society to take that on and to enlist the help of Zahra. Imagine Alice and her going head to head. It would be interesting.

Everyday Magic by Emily Albright #BookReview #Playlist #Giveaway

Everyday Magic (Untitled #2)
by Emily Albright
Publisher: Merit Press
Release Date: December 2nd 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance

For once, Maggie McKendrick just wants to control her own life. Her overbearing Hollywood director father has it all planned out for her: UCLA, law school, then working as an entertainment lawyer, preferably for him. But Maggie has other, more creative-spirit friendly, plans. Namely, Thrippletons School of Fashion and Design in England, and then onto becoming a designer, preferably a wildly successful one. The big snag in her plan? Getting it past her dad.

A movie shoot takes the family to the Scottish Highlands for the summer, and closer to Maggie’s dream school. While there, she runs into the charming Preston Browne. Maggie is intrigued and decides to bend her no guys rule—instituted after her ex used her to get close to her dad. Forced to keep secrets from Preston in order to protect the future plans she’s made, Maggie finds herself falling for the tall Brit. And for once in her life she knows that he’s interested in her, not her Hollywood connections. When Maggie's father blackmails her into dating his lead actor, she isn’t left with a choice. The biggest problem isn’t having to date hunky, mega-hottie, Ben Chambers. No, it’s praying she doesn’t lose Preston in the process.

Excelling at her dream school, Maggie’s personal life is a tangled mess. She needs to decide if living a lie is worth losing Preston or chance going against her father and facing his wrath. When the tabloids expose the truth of her fake relationship with Ben, Maggie's world is thrown into a tailspin. Ultimately, Maggie must find the courage to take risks and forge ahead on her own path.

Everyday Magic has an extremely sweet romance, great friendships and both the ups and downs of family. I did not read The Heir and The Spare but you don’t need to in order to read Everyday Magic.

First of all, it’s not often you see both parents and these parents were even having marital issues. I thought it was interesting that Maggie’s dad is a director but also verbally and physically abusive to his family. It made me think of the current Johnny Depp situation going on where people are angry he was cast in Fantastic Beast because of the abuse against his wife allegations. He’s not the first and there are many directors/actors/etc. That have had allegations or even been convicted of crimes and are still famous. People still see their movies. I thought it was a really interesting take to have that Everyday Magic.

The book had mostly sweet moments. I expected more with the fake relationship but it was nice that the focus stayed mainly on Maggie and Preston. We get a lot of cute and light hearted moments with them. It was also nice to see them not freak out over every little thing in their relationship. I like couples that have a strong relationship. Yes they of course have bumps in the road but they are not crippling.

Maggie is a great character, I loved how she has a passion for fashion. (I didn’t mean to rhyme) She fights back to follow her dream, even though her dad is a dictator. She is super close to her mom and brother, I loved their relationship. I also liked the good friends she makes at school. For someone who comes from an intense home, she is very down to Earth.

I liked Everyday Magic. It had lots of sweet cute moments and then of course the drama was interesting and not too overwhelming. It all had a nice flow.

Emily Albright's debut novel, THE HEIR AND THE SPARE, is releasing January 18, 2016 from Merit Press.

She's a writer, a major bookworm, a lover of romantic movies, a wife, a mother, an owner of one adorable (yet slightly insane) cockapoo, and uses way too many :).
