One Way Brain: My Review Troubles

I write fantastic reviews….

In the shower. In my car. Walking outside.

I write okay reviews….

when I sit down at my computer.

I know that this plagues me and I’m not sure if anyone else has the same problem. I will read a book and even sometimes while i’m reading, I will be thinking about it and digesting it. This is when my best writing comes out...but it’s all in my head. It sounds like there is an easy solution, keep a notebook with me so that when I read I can take notes. (Please do not tell me to write in my book…) More often than not my reading is stolen moments, when my kids are not asking for a drink or to make them dinner or do their laundry. So even if I had a notebook it would probably be filled with random words my son has decided to write in there when I’m not looking. I think my other problem is that I’m not a savvy typer on electronic devices. I would like to blame it on my age but my husband is older than me and can type like a speed demon on his phone. So the idea of making annotations is great but for me it takes up to much of my reading time trying to do it. I have even considered a voice recorder but I don’t know how often I would talk out loud honestly. I was that kid in school who couldn’t write rough drafts. When I would go to write the final paper I would change everything. Sometimes I wish there was a way to just plug into my brain.

How about you? Do you have this problem of reviews going from your head down on to paper?

NOWHERE BUT HERE Synopsis:

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

All That Burns (All That Glows #2)
by Ryan Graudin
Publisher: Harper Teen
Release Date: February 10th 2015

In this thrilling sequel to All That Glows, the worlds of magic and mortal are colliding as London celebrates its new king, marking an era of unity between the Faery realm and the human one. Emrys, the Faery guard to the British royal family, sacrificed her powers to be with King Richard, choosing love over immortality. But now, as Emrys struggles to navigate her place between the Faery queen’s court and London’s lavish galas, danger looms beyond the Thames. When a prisoner with dark, strange magic breaks out of Queen Titania’s labyrinthine prison, endangering Emrys's king and sparking an uprising, Emrys must make the hardest decision of all.

Will she reclaim her magic to save Richard’s life and lose him forever? Or stay powerless as the kingdom goes down in flames?

Going into a second book like All that Burns can be stressful for me. I was so worried about Richard and Emrys. I didn’t want anything to happen to them! I’m was really pleased with how Ryan Graudin continued their story.

I loved the plot and it actually felt like it moved faster than the first book. It picks up where All that Glows leaves off. Richard and Emrys unveiling the Fae and teaching the nation how to coexist with them. What I love so much about it, is that it really shows the struggle of accomplishing this. It gives the diversity of the fact that not everyone is happy with the decision. Especially when it comes to cutting down on tech and relinquishing a bit of control to magic. I also like how Emrys has her own struggle with giving up her magic to become mortal. Also there is some great tie-in to Camelot and of course a mystery to be solved.

Emrys has definitely changed since her days as a Fae. She is more emotionally driven than duty driven. I loved how firm she is in her love for Richard, even when she has doubts. There is that glowing spot in the back of her mind reminding her what she is fighting for. She is still pretty tough even without her powers. She finds it difficult to take a more sideline role.

Richard is as always Richard. Sweet, reliable and charming. I like how steady and understanding he is.

I loved that Annabelle has more of role in this story. She’s a fierce character. I wouldn’t mind seeing a spin-off of her. Her energy is contagious even in story form.

Keiran is an interesting addition. Especially because he is not Fae but Ad-hen which is something different. Adds to depth of the paranormal creatures.

I really enjoyed All that Burns and I burned right through it. Ha ha...okay not so funny but I was sucked in and reading at top speed to fit all the clues together. Who is doing this, why are they doing it, how are they going to stop this. Ahh! Like I said I’m definitely rooting for an Anabelle spin-off!

My cast ages might need to be adjusted a little bit...

I love that Ryan is doing a pre-order special if you order the book for her local bookshop. I pre-ordered a copy. Support Local!

My name is Ryan and I've been writing ever since I grabbed one of my dad's old tax ledgers and created this masterpiece: see image.

My writing has since improved, though my obsession with wolves has remained relatively the same (I even own a wolf-hybrid pup.) My childhood was a happy, sunny thing. I grew up on a steady diet of fairytales, salt-marshes, music and brothers who would re-enact Redwall battles with me in the back yard. I went to an artsy sort of high-school that allowed cello recitals in the hallways and impromptu poetry slams in the cafeteria. It was there I decided that writing was what I wanted to do more than anything.

I'm officially a grownup now (I suppose one must admit that once they turn 26). My diet still includes fairytales, salt-marshes and art, but there are a few new loves thrown in. A big one is travel. Pieces of my heart are scattered like breadcrumbs all over the globe--I've bartered them off for writing inspiration, so I suppose it's a fair trade.

When I'm not cramming my earthly belongings into a backpack and waiting in airport security lines, I'm doing one of the following: Writing YA novels, Photographing weddings with my husband, Making our little white cottage more homey, Playing with my wolf pup, Trying out Korean récipes, Haunting local coffee shops with my friends.

The Guest Post

SOME RULES OF THE ROAD

Like Lucy Sommersworth, the heroine of Love, Lucy, my parents gave me the gift of a lifetime: a backpacking trip to Europe. I was a bit older than Lucy—22, and just out of
college—but when I arrived in Milan, Italy with a Eurail pass, a copy of Let’s Go: Europe, and a seventy-pound backpack I could barely lift, I was a wee bit terrified. Like Lucy, I spoke only a little bit of Italian, just barely enough to get by, and I wasn’t particularly good at
reading maps or train schedules. Unlike Lucy, I was travelling solo.

Luckily, my journey began with training wheels. I’d just taken a college Italian class, and my professor had offered a safe crash pad for the first few days of my trip—in
her family home in the Alps. Less luckily, when I reached Malpensa airport, nobody was there to pick me up. Giddy with excitement and jet lag, I wandered around the airport, eavesdropping on Italians as they hugged each other hello and goodbye, and had noisy arguments. I’d never felt more alone in
my life. Where would I sleep that night if my ride didn’t show up?

Luckily, my professor’s brother arrived at last to whisk me away to the family home in Domodossola. The extended family welcomed and fed me, gave me tours of their city
with its charming medieval center, helped me practice my Italian, and, when the time was right, brought me to the train station where my solo travels began for
real. It was time to take off the training wheels.

If I’d felt alone back in the airport, I was even more so on that train to Verona, a city where I didn’t know a soul. In those pre-internet days, I could disappear into thin air and nobody would even notice I was gone. The thought was chilling, but oddly exciting.
By nightfall, I’d made it to Verona. I’d figured out the public transportation, found a youth hostel, and booked myself a bed. Best of all, I had introduced myself to a handful of other backpackers. We hung out together in the hostel’s common area, sharing bread and cheese, exchanging stories, discussing the rules of the road—those bits of practical wisdom our travels were teaching us. Here are a few.

Time passes differently on the road.  Spend a few very intense hours seeing the sites with strangers and by the end of the day, those strangers have become a part of your story. Years later you’ll see their faces in your photo album and still remember stray details of the adventures you shared together, even if you can’t quite recall their names.

Spontaneity is key.  There are few things as magical as showing up at a train station with no idea where you’re headed next, picking a random
train, and hopping on.

Janis Joplin said it best: Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.  When you’re carrying all your possessions on
your back in a city where you don’t know a soul, you’re absolutely free. You can go anywhere, do anything. That freedom has its lonely moments—but it
can be the doorway to all kinds of adventures.

Embrace misadventure.  As carefully as you plan there will be crazy mistakes: wrong turns, slept-through train stops, multilingual misunderstandings, and all kinds of other blunders—and these will make the best stories. My misadventures are some of my favorite memories. The time I missed curfew and had to climb into my hostel through a second-story window. The morning when, hanging out my recently washed clothes to dry, I dropped my wet underthings out the window, onto a
stranger’s head. The night when, with no room to stay in, I slept on Venice’s train station steps with about a hundred other backpackers, the stars above us and the Grand Canal stretched out before us.

Would I trade that last memory for a safe, comfy night in an actual bed?  Not on your life.
