The Offering by Kimberly Derting Blog Tour #Review #Excerpt #Giveaway

offeringThe Offering by Kimberly Derting

True love—and world war—is at stake in the conclusion to The Pledge trilogy, a dark and romantic blend of dystopia and fantasy.

Charlie, otherwise known as Queen Charlaina of Ludania, has become comfortable as a leader and a ruler. She’s done admirable work to restore Ludania’s broken communications systems with other Queendoms, and she’s mastered the art of ignoring Sabara, the evil former queen whose Essence is alive within Charlie. Or so she thinks.

When the negotiation of a peace agreement with the Queendom of Astonia goes awry, Charlie receives a brutal message that threatens Ludania, and it seems her only option is to sacrifice herself in exchange for Ludanian freedom.

But things aren’t always as they seem. Charlie is walking into a trap—one set by Sabara, who is determined to reclaim the Queendoms at any cost.

Pledge Trilogy

Wow. Well the book started out with quite a bang. Wow, I had to put the book down for a minute after reading the prologue. I quickly went back because then I had to know more but still.

This is book 3 in the series so I will avoid spoilers for this book but there will be some if you haven’t read book 1 and 2. Beware.

It’s amazing to me how much Charlie has grown from The Pledge to now The Offering. In The Essence we saw her being a lot more timid and reserved as she was trying to navigate through being a new Queen and dealing with Sabara/Layla’s essence inside of her. I felt like in this book she really comes into her own. Where she was barely riding a horse and falling face first into the mud during Zafir’s combat lessons, she now is...well she still has trouble with horses but she is more able to defend herself. She still can make rash impulsive decisions but she learns from them and by the ending of the book it’s like she blooms. I loved how her character developed.

I did miss some characters like Zafir who had a smaller role in this book but we get to know other characters better like Eden. I can’t say I became her super fan or anything but it nice to get to see some other sides of her. I also love Brooklyn and getting in her head is always fun. She is such a tough cookie. Max takes on his usual subtle role which just shows Charlie doesn’t need a guy to protect her. I really liked that we got to see more of Sage. It totally changed my view of her. There are many characters in this series but I never felt like they were fighting for your attention or underdeveloped. I felt like I got to know each character enough and of course I wouldn’t mind some novellas on a few, like Sage. Even though Charlie is obviously the main focus I felt like the story was shared among the characters and made it feel well rounded.

I love the world that has been built with the kingdoms. We once again venture out from the palace and get to experience more parts of Ludania. We saw a lot of the Scablands in book 2 and now we are seeing a lot of the coastal region. I thought it was cool how that Charlie gets to venture out into these areas rather than having them just refered to as she holes up in her palace. I want to know more though!! I want to visit the other kingdoms!! More spinoffs, more novellas, more writing….well I guess I shouldn’t walking around making demands. Ha ha.

There were plenty of intense moments. Like I said the prologue had me dropping the book on the ground but there were other parts where I felt like I couldn’t slow down my eyes. I was going to give myself whiplash flying through the pages like I was. Especially the last 100 there is no way I could have taken a break from that.

So yes this was an excellent 3rd installment of the series and I was very happy with it. My inner fantasy girl really enjoyed these books. Magic, Queendoms, Murder and cutie pie guys, you can’t go wrong with that.

The two guards dragged Xander toward a small, round opening in the stone floor, a hole through which blood could easily drain away to the sewers.  They, along with two others who’d appeared, pinned him to the ground while he continued to writhe and scream. They waited until he was too weary to fight any longer. Until he had no other option but to accept this fate he’d been handed.
Then the executioner raised his blade.
Niko would have closed his eyes, if Elena wasn’t observing him so keenly. Unlike Niko, she had no interest in turning away. She seemed to relish the moment.
When the axe fell and the sharp crack of metal struck stone beneath, he felt the slightest jerk from beside him. But when he turned his gaze on her, he saw that she was frowning at the hem of her gown, rather than at the grisly view at her feet.
“Will you look at that,” she clucked, craning her neck to get a better look, and ignoring everything else going on around her. “He got blood on my new dress.”

Sunday Post: Book Haul

Hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

It's Sunday, sometimes I'm not sure if I should cheer that it's a day off or be sad because it means I have to go to work tomorrow. This was my birthday week so I did get some books. I'm not going to share my ebooks until next week I've decided but I have pictures of my lovely phsyical books. Also my Book Club is doing a Read-a-thon this month that I'm already failing on. If you have any book suggestions that would be great. Check out the list of what qualifies HERE

Book Haul

So it was my birthday on the 8th and that is usually more bookish for me then Christmas. My husband bought me the awesome book quote blanket from Barnes & Noble and let me tell you it's soft and warm and I absolutely love it. He also bought some books that I had wanted. (Notice I use the blanket as the background.

Perfect Ruin
Happy Marriage!? (manga)
Alice in Zombieland (I've been wanting to read this forever)
Cinderella Screwed Me Over (Another one I've been wanting to read. I really wanted a physcial copy not an ebook for some reason.)

My mom also bought me a book for my birthday. She wanted it to arrive on my actual birthday but because of the snow we didn't even get mail some days. Then I also won a book from Goodreads (ya I know right)

Legacy of the Clockwork Key by Kristin Bailey (I love the cover of book 2 so I wanted the collection for my shelf)
Stormbringer by Shannon Delany

This ARC of Univited was found and unclaimed. So after screaming about book abuse. You can tell the cover was bent back and around I brought it home. Told it I would love it and never hurt it the way it has been.

Savor by Kate Evangelista Blog Tour #Review #Excerpt #Giveaway

Savor by Kate Evangelista
Genre: New Adult
Publisher: Crescent Moon Press

Mature and explicit content. Not recommended for readers below 18-years-old. Yup, you’ve got to be that old to read my story. Consider yourself warned.

I’m Dakota Collins, a tough talking, eye patch wearing, workaholic photography student. Why am I important? Well, maybe because I get to spend an entire month with Vicious, only the sickest indie rock band out there.

You see, I needed a subject for my Spring Showcase introspective in order to graduate. During a chance encounter at a club I’d been sent to cover for the Daily Gossip, our ironically named college paper, the features writer I usually teamed up with introduced me to the band—by accident, I might add. It involved a run in with a scary, bald bodyguard. Anyway, long story short, I signed a contract to take pictures of Vicious.

I should have known their handsome yet way too serious for his own good bassist, Luka Visraya, wouldn’t be able to keep his hands to himself. He’s gorgeous and all, but the way he smiles spelled trouble with a capital L. I’m in for a long month with him around.

Crazy shit happens and then some. So, if you want the skinny on Vicious and the events revolving around my stay at Lunar Manor, read my story.

Again, refer to the warning above.

Review

It didn’t take me long to get hooked on this book. Savor by Kate Evangelista was wow. That’s what I have to say wow.

What I loved the most about the book, besides my need to live at Lunar Manor was the characters. Dakota often references Alice in Wonderland and there are so many things that do remind me of it. I kept thinking of Dray as the Mad Hatter, especially when she visits him in his part of the house but at the same time he so sweet and innocent. I wanted to crawl into the book and cuddle him. Demetri just seems light hearted and confident. Phoenix is cute and bubbly but can flip the switch to the seductive songstress easily. Yanna in her Gothic Lolita outfit and bad ass attitude. Of course then there is Luka who is the enigma wrapped in an handsome package. I just felt I really bonded with the bandmates as much as Dakota did. I really want to just go hang out with them. I like how Kate took the time to develop each of the characters and make them unique in their own special ways. It felt like the book wasn’t just about Dakota and Luka but about all of them. I also really liked some of the less focused on characters as well.

Dakota herself is a special character. Another one of the things Kate does well is how she makes her lead. Dakota is not perfect and isn’t in the realm of I’m so beautiful and don’t know. She’s gone through something terrible, traumatic and has the bare the scars right out there for people to see. Dakota has an eye patch that covers one eye but rather than use it as something to feel sorry for herself she uses it to make herself stronger. Like a kind of F U I’ve been through worse feeling. I loved how she doesn’t take crap and tells other characters to grow up and suck it up.

The paranormal aspect of the book was so completely subtle, I loved how it was intertwined slowly and not just dumped on you. You know something seems a little off but you can’t quite put your finger on it. The fact that Dakota isn’t completely clued in makes sense.

Now Lunar Manor is one freaking awesome place. I was so submerged into the world that Kate created it was like I lived there myself. I could really get a feel and idea of all the places around me. It helped that the book takes place in December and obviously that’s about the time I read it. I just loved how descriptive things were but not over the top. Great world building.

Oh the ending just kill me now. If only I had book two in my hands I would not for a second have stopped reading. I would have flowed right into the next book. I can not gush about it enough and for my first read of the year, what a great book to start with. I have to say that I think this book would be a kick ass graphic novel.

EXERPT

“Dakota Collins!”
I lowered my camera. The use of my full name never came with good consequences. I blinked my vision back at her even if I wanted to spend the rest of the night taking his picture. Sweat rose over my upper lip. I may just have found my subject for the Spring Showcase.
            The only problem?
I had to find a way to convince him to be in my project. Something told me this wouldn’t be easy. By the way my heart beat in my ears, drowning out the music and Silvia having a fit in front of me, I wanted it too much. I wanted him too much.
“This the guy you were saying?” I showed Silvia the picture I’d taken. This seemed to pacify her because she sidled closer, mesmerized like a moth to a flame.
“Luka Visraya,” she said with a moan like she’d just tasted the most luscious chocolate before taking a long gulp of her cocktail. The name didn’t register. Silvia must have noticed my blank expression because she continued. “He’s the bassist for Vicious.”
Still no pings of recognition in my head.
She slapped her thigh. “Where have you been? It’s weird that you haven’t heard of them. Their songs are on the radio like every second.”
Of course I hadn’t heard of them. I liked listening to country and I hardly kept up with current events.
“Name one?” Okay, I had a name. Luka. Exotic. A bassist. Part of a band I should know about. So he’s famous. I slowly felt my chances of asking him to be my subject slip from my grasp. If he was someone famous, fat chance he’d say yes to a graduating photography student like me. I just about deflated when Silvia mentioned one of their songs. “Oh, I know that one!” By accident. It played in the radio of the cab I rode in to Sacrifice. I stared at the picture of him then lifted my gaze to where he sat. “He’s gone.”
“What?” Silvia whipped around in time to come face to face with a wall of man. “Whoa!” She pushed at him. “Watch it, buddy!”
“Give me the camera,” he said in a threatening tone.
Big. Beefy. Bald. The three Bs that made up the quintessential bodyguard.
I clutched my DSLR closer to my chest and looked up at him with my good eye. “And why would I do that?” The patch didn’t seem to intimidate him because he just reached out. So much for my Bond villain aspirations. I moved away from his grubby hand. No one touched my camera but me.
Despite her size, Silvia came between me and the mountain. “We’re here to cover Sacrifice for our college paper. You don’t have the right to take away my colleague’s camera.”
Yeah! You give it to him, Silvy.
Not that I couldn’t take care of myself. But if Silvia wanted to play hero, I wouldn’t stand in her way.
“What seems to be the problem here?” a soft, authoritative voice chimed in.
The bodyguard moved aside to reveal the Gothic Lolita. She stood at just about the same height as Silvia, but she possessed an older aura even if she seemed to be our age.
“She’s been taking pictures,” Baldy said.
Lolita’s kohl eyes landed on me then shifted to my camera.
“As I was saying to the big guy,” Silvia explained. “My colleague and I are covering the opening of Sacrifice.”
“For what paper?” Lolita asked without taking her eyes off me. I clutched my camera like an extra appendage. In some ways it was. After losing half my sight, I relied on my camera like an extra eye, seeing the world through its lens. I would rather die than lose it.
“The Daily Gossip,” I said before Silvia could answer just to relieve some of the awkward tension building in me under her gaze. “We study at Wexler U.”
She tilted her head, crossing her arms.
“Okay,” I quickly stammered out. “I get that the name of our paper sounds like a tabloid, but the Daily Gossip is a cool campus paper.” The last part maybe only I believed since Silvia raised her eyebrow at me, but Lolita and the mountain didn’t have to know that.
No one spoke after that. Even in a noisy club, the silence in our group rang in my ears. Not waiting for the situation to get any more awkward, I plowed forward with my own selfish intensions.
“You know Luka.” I said it more as a statement, but it came out like a question.
            Lolita nodded.
“I’m Dakota Collins and I’m graduating this spring. I was wondering if Luka would be interested in—”
“What would I be interested in?” a smooth voice joined our group.
The walls of my throat closed, chocking the rest of what I had to say. All eyes turned to Luka. Silvia dropped her empty glass. It bounced off the bodyguard’s shoe and landed in a clatter but didn’t break. Even with my height, I still had to look up at him.
“What are you doing here?” Lolita admonished. “You should be backstage.”
One side of his lips came up. God. Without the scowl, his face lit up. I had to stop the urge to lift my camera and start snapping away. And his eyes were piercing blue. The kind that stretched over my mother’s farm in the summer. Damn.
Seeing him up close, I knew I’d give any one of my kidneys for a chance to take his picture in a formal shoot.
“We have five minutes. Chill, Yana.” He tugged at one of her pigtails.
“Luka,” Silvia managed. “I’m a big fan. Will you sign my chest?”
Bypassing my petite colleague, Luka’s intensely blue gaze studied me. He reached out and I flinched back. His fingers almost grazed my patch. What the hell was the matter with him? Trying to touch my eye patch was tantamount to poking a bandage over a wound and asking the person if it hurts.
Gothic Lolita—Yana—yanked Luka’s arm down. “I’m so sorry!” Her whole aura changed. She went from all business to panicky. “My brother sometimes forgets his manners. He didn’t mean anything about touching your…” She bit her lower lip, maybe trying to keep herself from saying the wrong thing.
That little faux pas cleared my head of the Luka haze and spurred me into action. “Luka, will you let me take your picture for my final project?” I didn’t know where my courage came from, but I knew if I didn’t take this chance, I’d regret it. I had to have him as my subject.
Still not removing his gaze from my face, like my patch transfixed him, he tilted his head to one side very much like his sister did earlier.
“Luka, don’t!” Yana said, but from the consideration on Luka’s face, she was too late.
            “You’re a photographer?”
“Yes.” I nodded, in case the word wasn’t enough.
“And you’d like me to be the subject of your project?”
God yes! This time, I could only nod. I didn’t want him to see how eager I was. And I couldn’t live with myself if I embarrassed myself further.
            I waited with baited breath.
It seemed everyone in our group waited with baited breath for what the golden god had to say about my brazen request. I soon realized when Luka spoke, everyone listened. The way he pronounced every word precisely yet still spoke so smoothly, like butter on warm toast, captured everyone’s attention. To say he captivated us was an understatement. Something in me certainly wanted to hear him keep speaking. He could read from an accounting textbook in that voice and no one would get bored.
“I need to know that you’re good,” he finally said.
Something about his words seemed to hold a different meaning. I must have missed the alcohol in the soda Silvia had given me. Maybe I was drunk and this was all a blackout dream.
“What are you saying?” Yana faced Luka all the way now, her petite form all rigid.
He unleashed a full on megawatt smile my way. I almost had to cover my eye from it. At my side, Silvia gasped. Her long nails dug into my arm. Like staring at the sun, I couldn’t take my gaze away from him no matter how bad it was for me.
“We’re about to perform. I want you to take several pictures then send them to Yana. If she approves, we’ll see about your request.”
Then, like smoke, he disappeared into the crowd.

When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn't going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master's courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she lives in the Philippines and writes full time.

Sunday Post: Book Haul

Hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

Hello Sunday!!! I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend if this is indeed your weekend. My husband was called into work because of the snow (news station) So this is what I'm kind of looking at outside.
My driveway is in there somewhere. My husband already shoveled piles of snow but it's still falling. I had to trudge out to take my son to the doctor because he has an ear infection and the roads were not fun. Then it's supposed to drop to negative 9 degrees negative 17 with the wind chill. That's the high for tomorrow.
So the kids/teachers are off school tomorrow but I still have to work. Hopefully I don't freeze into Popsicle by just walking out my door.
So if you are anywhere with this weather, stay safe. Stay home and read instead of venturing out.

As far as books go I only got one from the publisher
