The Darkest Part (Living Heartwood )
by Trisha Wolfe
Release Date: 08/06/13

Pressing the boundaries of both the psyche and the heart, Sam and Holden embark on a dangerous journey that will test the limits of love.

Sam Wintry’s life used to be almost perfect. She was engaged to her childhood best friend and high school sweetheart, Tyler Marks, planning an amazing cross-country honeymoon during her college break. But after a hit-and-run leaves her in ruin, she begins seeing Tyler’s fractured, ghostly presence, and her family believes she’s losing her mind. Not until she completes their journey, stopping along the way to scatter Tyler's remains, will Tyler be able cross over. Only...is Sam ready for him to leave her?

When the black sheep of the Marks' family, Holden Marks, returns to check on Tyler's case, Sam convinces him to give her his brother's ashes. Despite their shaky history, she needs him...plus, he owes it to Sam and his brother. What she doesn’t count on is Holden’s relentlessness to go on the trip.

On the road, Holden realizes just how unhinged Sam has become. Dealing with her psychosis forces him to confront his dark past, making it harder to keep secrets hidden that should remain buried. Especially from Sam, the only woman he’s ever loved. And as Sam starts to unravel the truth, she begins to question if the brother she's unwillingly falling for again is in an even darker place than her.

***MY REVIEW***

First off, I have to say I have firmly decided it’s impossible for Trisha Wolfe to write something that I do not love immediately. Her books get better with everyone she writes. This was her first departure into the land of contemporary and it was outstanding and unique. I adore The Darkest Part.

What an interesting storyline, Sam has recently lost the love of her life, Tyler. Although it’s been months since he has passed on, she finds herself still seeing him. As in what she considers to be his ghostly being haunting the world of the living. Her parents and her psychiatrist think that it’s a trick of her mind, and her way of keeping him alive. For Sam seeing Tyler is not only very real but she has in depth conversations with him. Then enters Holden, who not only has a past with Sam but dark secrets of his own. In order to help Sam move on, Holden accompanies her on the road trip that Tyler and her had been planning for their honeymoon, spreading his ashes a long the way.

Sam is a very real character and Trisha never fails to make her female leads shine, even one who is nursing a broken heart. There are times when I believe Sam, that she must obviously be really seeing Tyler. It’s that convincing and then I remember, wait that can be right can it? You almost live on the edge with the book wondering if what’s real and what’s not.

Holden has spent so much of his life protecting others and denying himself. Although he comes off in a totally different light to the others around him. Sam especially thinks he is a complete ass, but she has a good reason for it. I like how we learn snippets of his life through the road trip with Sam and a little help from Tyler.

Of course as with Trisha’s books there is some crazy great chemistry between the characters.

I can’t gush enough about this book. It’s by far one of my favorite contemporaries and I find myself hankering to get a tree tattoo. If you have been unsure about new adult books, this is a great book to start you off. You will love it and find a love of the genre I’m sure.
